Music is of enormous importance in Wycombe Abbey School Hangzhou. Before they embark on their IGCSE curriculum, music is a compulsory course for every pupil, since top universities around the world pay great attention to music education. WASHZ offers professional and highly-structured music courses, including theory, appreciation, composition, vocal music and more than ten musical instrument courses, thereby developing pupils’ appreciation of music and their musical skills.
Every pupil in WASHZ has the opportunity to give musical performances on campus. Pupils who are members of a choir or learn a musical instrument usually give performances or take part in contests out of school; this gives them ample opportunities to develop their confidence and skills in performance. Moreover, all pupils in WAS, regardless of whether they learn music or not, have the chance to attend performances by renowned musicians and so to be inspired in their own appreciation and performance of music.
Art
A varied art education serves as the foundation for developing creativity.
At Wycombe Abbey School Hangzhou we pay great attention to art education and so art is a compulsory course for pupils in the lower grades rather than just being optional.
We offer a wealth of art courses, including graphic design, painting, photography and sculpture, helping pupils to discover new skills and talents and develop their creativity, coordination and perseverance. Art exhibitions are often held to display pupils’ works. Pupils interested in art can choose to study art in their IGCSE and A-Level programs, thereby enabling them fully to develop their personal interests in art.
Our school has exceptionally well-equipped art classrooms and workshops which offer an ideal environment for creativity and help to lay a solid foundation for future art studies and careers in art and the creative industries.
Drama
Drama is another distinctive course on offer at Wycombe Abbey School Hangzhou.
We encourage all pupils to take part in dramatic performances, in order to improve their performance skills and their capabilities in writing, directing and stage management, as well as to develop their confidence, communication and social skills, self-discipline, leadership, agility, creativity and teamwork.
Sports
High-quality extracurricular sports courses develop pupils’ physical strength and mental resilience.
Wycombe Abbey School Hangzhou not only focuses on pupils’ academic performance, but also pays great attention to building their character and skills, their perseverance and open-mindedness, their leadership and team working skills, as well as many other aspects of their all-round development that can be developed effectively through sports. For this reason we encourage our pupils to participate in a range of sports at school.
International scientists have proved that children who play sport are not only healthier and stronger but also more likely to succeed academically. The world’s leading universities all recognise the importance of sport. Therefore, a rich exercise curriculum is essential.
