Following last week’s A-Level results release, the IGCSE examination grades for 2025 Summer were officially announced this week.

WAS Hangzhou pupils achieved A*-A grades in almost 43% of all examinations, maintaining steady improvement from last year. Notably, nearly 19% of grades were A*, doubling UK national averages (where GCSE A*-A stands at approximately 21%).

This year saw exceptional performances in liberal arts: History‌ and ‌Spanish‌ achieved 100% A* grades; First Language English received 67% A*-A grades; First Language Chinese achieved 100% A*-B while Art and Design secured nearly 90% A*-B.

Science subjects continued their strong record: Mathematics‌(fast-track) achieved 77% A*-A and Additional Mathematics‌ achieved 67% A*-A.

*Mathematics(fast-track): enables pupils to complete the curriculum within an accelerated timeframe.

Additional Mathematics: covers content spanning from grade 7 to 12 in the Chinese system, tailored for pupils with a strong grounding in mathematics.

Additionally, pupils achieved 100% A*-C ratio in ‌Computer Science‌, ‌English as an Additional Language‌, and ‌Second Language Chinese, laying solid foundations for A-Level studies and university applications in the future.

This summer celebrated milestone achievements, including grade 10 pupils ‌T. Zhu‌ and ‌A. Yin‌, who attained straight A*-A grades across all subjects. We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to the founding pupils who achieved outstanding results in these examinations. Having laid a robust academic foundation at WAS Hangzhou since joining us in grade 7, they now embark on even greater aspirations from this springboard. Congratulations – your accomplishments deserve every accolade!

This week, both Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel examination boards released the 2025 A-Level results. According to data from The Guardian, the total number of A-Level entries this year has once again exceeded the 820,000 mark. Amidst such intense competition, pupils at WAS Hangzhou have risen to the challenge, delivering results that surpass not only the UK national average but also global standards.

In the 2025 A-Level examinations, WAS Hangzhou once again achieved exceptional results far exceeding the global average.

According to statistics from Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation), the global averages for A* and A are 9% and 28% respectively.

Furthermore, WAS Hangzhou’s A-Level performance this year holds an advantage when compared even to the academic benchmark of UK independent schools.

Statistics show that the average A*-A rate in UK private schools is approximately 50%, whereas WAS Hangzhou has exceeded 55% for three consecutive years. This undoubtedly serves as the most compelling demonstration of our school’s teaching quality.

Read the original post: Psychological Education Cultivates Resilient Pupils

A UK National Health Service survey reported that about 20% of children face psychological issues, a rising trend. Many such issues begin in early childhood but often go unaddressed due to children’s limited ability to express themselves and manage emotions.

At WASHZ, our 15-year continuous education system supports both academic and psychological development. Under this programme, Kindergarten focuses on building a solid foundation for a sound personality and emotional health.

Martina Daynes, our esteemed Executive Head of WASHZ kindergarten, brings a wealth of knowledge with her postgraduate degree in psychology and child development. She emphasises affectivity regulation as a key lesson for pupils entering kindergarten.

K1 teacher Nydia Li has recently acquired a master’s degree of preschool education from University College London. She identifies separation anxiety as a common issue among young pupils based on her profound teaching experience.

Additionally, Ms Li stresses the importance of communication between teachers and parents to address individual needs so that pupils can get proper help.

Codie Fleming, who has been teaching in WASHZ kindergarten since its founding and now serves as extracurricular activity coordinator for the entire school, highlights kindergarten as a crucial time for pupils to develop empathy.

WASHZ kindergarten is a “mirror,” where pupils can safely explore and understand their emotions, supported by trusted teachers and friends.

Kindergarten is critical in bridging pre-school and lower school education, helping pupils develop the skills and mindset needed for this transition.

K3 teacher Thomas Vos, with over ten years of experience teaching in China, notes that while pupils view entering lower school as nervous and exciting at the same time, many parents worry more about their children’s ability to adapt, esperically those with kids born in summer as they are usually younger than others in the same class.

However, Mr Vos believes that this gap is not as obvious as people think and will disappear qucikly as pupils grow older. In daily teaching, he ensures that every pupil has the learning ability and language ability to ready them for lower school.

According to Mr Vos, the teaching approach in K3 shifts from ‘play-based’ to a gradually more ‘academics-based’, increasingly focusing on concentration and structured learning.

To further prepare pupils for lower school, the kindergarten plans to introduce a “buddy programme”, pairing K3 pupils with lower school pupils for shared activities like reading and group tasks. This initiative aims to reduce unfamiliarity and anxiety about entering the next stage.

As graduation approaches, Mr Vos plans to share a story about a hermit crab outgrowing its shell, symbolising the growth pupils experience at the kindergarten.

The foundation laid in early childhood will lead to future success. The seeds of excellence are planted in their early years, reflecting the core mission of WASHZ Kindergarten: to nurture confident, capable learners prepared for lifelong growth.

Read the original post: The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Embodies Holistic Education

Holistic education is frequently talked about in today’s field of education. However, what kind of pupils does holistic education aim to cultivate? Why does WASHZ value this education philosophy?

We may be able to find an example in an extraordinary expedition. This concept was embodied in a recent three-day expedition for WASHZ pupils to the Nanshan Bamboo Forest.

This event is a compulsory subject for pupils to pursue the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE).

In the vast Nanshan bamboo forest, WASHZ pupils calmly coped with many challenges, relying on teamwork to resolve many problems. Stepping out of the classroom and through the trials of the laws of nature, they rapidly grew up to the challenge.

Compared with ordinary hikes, DofE expeditions are more challenging, during which pupils face complex terrain and weather conditions. It is an even bigger test for those who have yet to face extensive outdoor experience.

K. Lieu from G12 had yearned for nature since childhood. He had an extra task ahead of him: recording the whole trip. Although he had prepared in advance, the sudden heavy rain caught him and his teammates off guard. When editing the video, he watched it scene by scene and admitted that the actual situation was far more thrilling than what was shown on the screen.

“On the second day, the route was the longest. It was raining and the road was extremely slippery. When going uphill, we couldn’t get a firm foothold at all. We had to grab the bamboo with our hands. Some bamboo was dead and broke off, causing us to fall over. All of us got soaked through.”

S. Wang, also from G12, agreed with Lieu’s assessment of the difficulty. Wang, participating in the expedition for the second time, thought this time was by far the more challenging.

With few people in the bamboo forest, the pupils were forced to rely solely on their teammates. Malachy Scullion, Head of Faculty of the Business and ICT Department at WASHZ, witnessed team members’ cooperation first-hand.

“People who are good at map reading and compass work usually plan the route. Someone who’s good at maths will do the mathematical calculations of how high to walk the altitude and also how far to walk. Other pupils who are quite good at being leadership will supervise what each person is doing.”

K. Lieu mentioned that they would sing to encourage each other when tired. No matter how steep the slope, as long as they were singing, they found they could cover it quickly.

As an experienced senior, S. Wang took the initiative to act as a “guide”. He led his teammates to draw up maps, use compasses to locate directions and share tips for outdoor survival.

The remarkable leadership he demonstrated during the expedition will be a significant boost for his future career. S. Wang has already been admitted to Loughborough University, ranking world first for sports-related subjects.

The bamboo forest is full of uncertainties and changes, just like a microcosm of the real world. Similarly, the pupils’ adventurous exploration is a preview of their future entry into society.

Whether it’s the meticulous planning before entering the bamboo forest, the ability to adapt to changing circumstances during the journey, or the order that runs through the whole process, they all indicate how these young people are well-prepared to meet their next challenges.

In this expedition, the challenges that WASHZ pupils faced were the complex surrounding environment and the limits of their physical strength and mental endurance.

S. Wang commented on his feelings at the time:

“When you are already physically exhausted, don’t have enough to eat, and you have to deal with bad weather and poor road conditions, it’s really easy to feel desperate.”

However, when he saw that the teachers and many teammates participating in the exploration for the first time were all persevering, he knew that he could keep going.

K. Lieu recalled that each had to carry a 15-kilo load. Climbing up one hill after another was a massive test of physical strength and willpower. When the body and mind reached the critical point, it was the moment to fight with willpower.

“Never giving up is a wonderful spirit.”

Indeed, none of them gave up. Complaints were turned into motivation, and their steps never ceased. Eventually, they arrived at their destination on time, with an error of only one kilometre from the original destination.

In Mr Scullion’s view, this expedition trip has taught the pupils vital “life skills” that will benefit them for a lifetime. First, they need to learn to plan in advance. They should respond calmly and use their strengths to solve problems when encountering difficulties. Even the physical strength cultivated through mountain climbing and long hikes is essential for achieving excellence.

In the future, the challenges they will face will be far more severe than this. As the saying goes, “The last leg of a journey just marks the halfway point.” Most people lack just that bit of tenacity. If they persevere a little more, they can embrace a vast expanse of open land, which is precisely what holistic education emphasises.

What “holistic education” aims to cultivate is not merely good pupils with excellent grades and strong learning abilities but individuals who can adapt to the times, establish themselves in a diverse international society, and possess all-round development.

This makes the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award a perfect platform for WASHZ to leverage in pursuing the holistic education concept.

After returning from the expedition in Nanshan Bamboo Forest, WASHZ pupils have seen more of the world and, more importantly, seen themselves. The seeds of being a leader, an explorer, and a navigator have been planted in their hearts. Memories may fade over time, but the composure and adaptability acquired from the expedition will play a crucial role in every critical moment in the future. This is the true value of holistic education.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

International student Zoë Capps vividly described her mood before coming to China. She has always been extremely interested in China and Chinese culture, and the Wycombe Abbey International Scholarship was an opportunity she couldn’t miss.

In September 2024, after a rigorous selection process that included academic performance, extracurricular activities, and a personal interview, ten international students joined WASHZ, starting the most crucial two years of their high school.

Among all the international students, George Miao has the deepest connection with China. He grew up in a Chinese family in the UK, listening to his father talk about Chinese culture.

Even so, George admitted that the transition from the UK to China was still somewhat difficult. However, the school’s comprehensive support system, including language classes, cultural orientation, and personal counselling, made this process easier with its inclusiveness and care.

“Busy” is the most common feeling among international students after coming to WASHZ. They have participated in various activities organised by the school, such as practising traditional martial arts, visiting cultural heritage projects and touring famous scenic spots, trying their best to embrace the impacts and surprises brought by the new environment. In the Chinese classes taught by Bruce Jia, the WASHZ Chinese principal, the students felt the unique artistic side of Chinese culture through characters and poems.

International student Dean Proffitt’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of the WASHZ experience. His participation in the ASEEDER Asian Business Simulation in early November marked a significant milestone. Despite never having participated in a competition outside of school in the UK, Dean and his teammates emerged successfully, clinching the second prize after intense competition against hundreds of opponents.

In late December, Dean will represent WASHZ and participate in the Model United Nations conference held in Shanghai. He receives weekly training with his teammates, during which he enjoys the critical thinking associated with the sessions.

As a performing art student, Zoë has unleashed her musical and artistic talents at WASHZ. At the scholarship programme’s inaugural event, her singing astonished the audience. On the AbbeyFest stage, she delivered three performances that amazed everyone. Now, she serves as the lead singer of the school band and helps with the preparations for the annual musical performance.

It is worth mentioning that Zoë also has the opportunity to help WASHZ KG with their language education. She enters the kindergarten classroom every Monday and Thursday to help teach the children phonics and reading.

“It’s a mix of international students and also Chinese students. I find the Chinese students’ language really good in English so I was really surprised. It’s been really nice getting to know them and every single time that I walk into the class now they are like ‘Miss Zoë!’ and it’s really nice to see them so happy.”

Although there is still some time before university applications, the international students have set their goals.

Dean’s hometown is not far from Manchester, so one of his ideal universities is the University of Manchester, but he also said:

“If I could, I would like to aim high, like Oxford, Cambridge, or Imperial College London.”

Dean has reasons to be confident. He has chosen four A-Level subjects: Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Business, and Geography, achieving excellent results of double A* and double A in his latest tests.

Dean believes that the teaching methods at WASHZ have many similarities with those in his old school in the UK, which has accelerated his adaptation process.

“I feel like it’s very interactive, so you are always able to give your opinions on things and ask questions whenever possible, so it helps you understand it further, which was similar to my old school in the UK.”

George added that the teachers always respond promptly when he needs help after class, and his post-exam review significantly improves his academic performance.

When asked about the university he wants to attend the most, he immediately answered “Imperial College London”.

Extracurricular activities (ECA), another important part of the holistic education at WASHZ, have left a deep impression on the international students.

WASHZ offers more than 200 ECAs covering sports, arts, and academia.

George and Dean chose horse riding and fencing, respectively. Although these two sports are pretty popular in the UK, they both said that they had yet to experience them before. ECAs allow them to develop their interests and expand their growth path.

International students revealed that only a few days left until the deadline when they learned about the scholarship programme for the first time. Making a decision that may affect one’s life in a short time requires great determination and courage, but it turns out they made the right bet.

For other pupils at WASHZ, this is also an excellent learning opportunity. Through the international students, these pupils better understand the world, and the impact of Chinese and Western thinking has empowered them with new critical thinking skills.

Zoë said that she hopes to take this opportunity to make connections between China and the UK. Every international student and every WASHZ pupil who is about to go abroad has unknowingly become a “diplomat” to promote friendship and deepen understanding.

WASHZ’s responsibilities are to empower them with comprehensive abilities, a confident attitude, and the resilience and courage to face challenges. Eventually, they will shine on the international stage.

As the ‘Harry Potter’ film series begins its re-release in China, a wave of nostalgia is sweeping by, connecting us to the magical journey many of us know well.

True literary classics possess the power to transcend time and space. In the 30 years since Harry Potter’s debut, this boy with round glasses and a lightning scar on his forehead has become a cherished memory in countless childhoods.

Recently, WASHZ held Harry Potter Week, involving the entire upper school, lower school, and kindergarten. All pupils and teachers were immersed in a magical campus, experiencing the extraordinary charm of this literary classic.

Emily Frazier, Upper School Head of Language and Communications, mentioned that the reason for choosing Harry Potter for the theme week was precisely because of its enduring vitality. The magical world has an unparalleled appeal to pupils of every generation, keeping them engaged and excited.

“We have decorated various parts of the school, creating a fun and immersive experience for the pupils, keeping them entertained and engaged in their learning.”

Beyond the enchantingly magical campus environment, the classrooms also adopted a magical atmosphere.

In Lower School and Kindergarten science classes, even without the Half-Blood Prince’s notebook, pupils could use their scientific knowledge to concoct potions of various colours.

In the kindergarten, Richard Bumford, Executive Head of Upper School, read Harry Potter picture books to the pupils.

In art classrooms, pupils unleashed their creativity and crafted their own owl companions.

This might be the first time these young pupils have heard of Harry Potter through the activities, but such classics have the magical power to attract readers from generation to generation into their enchanting world.

Ms Frazier has a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and History from the University of Oxford, complemented by a Master of Education degree from University College London. As a member of the English language teaching staff, she especially values the language learning opportunities that Harry Potter Week provides.

“We hope to inspire more pupils to fall in love with reading through Harry Potter. For instance, we organise treasure hunts that guide pupils to find answers in the books. More and more pupils are starting to read in the library, not just Harry Potter but many other books as well.”

Ms Frazier mentioned studies that suggest novels and stories can enhance language skills, particularly vocabulary and reading ability, more effectively than non-fiction works.

Additionally, Lower School and Upper School incorporated project-based learning using the famous newspaper from the magical world, the “Daily Prophet,” as a theme. Pupils were required to collaborate in groups to conduct themed research related to Harry Potter and write summary reports.

Language learning is an all-round process, where the four major components—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—need to be fully developed to truly enhance language proficiency.

In WASHZ’s IGCSE and A-Level curriculum, English language and English literature is central. For IGCSEs, the school offers three core compulsory courses: English as a First Language, English as a Second Language, and English Language and Literature. At A-Levels, we also offer English Language and Literature courses and IELTS. Moreover, many humanities and social science courses, such as psychology, history, and sociology, require pupils to have a solid foundation in language skills.

In the highly engaging learning process during Harry Potter Week, pupils’ autonomy was greatly stimulated as they carefully read the original texts and engaged in deep discussions with their group members. Each piece of work reflected effort and focus, helping them improve their writing and communication skills.

Ms Frazier believes that merely pursuing scores and grades cannot truly ignite pupils’ intrinsic motivation. It is only when they recognise the goals of their efforts, are willing to strive for them and personally experience the rewards of hard work that they can unleash their best potential.

Harry Potter Week culminated in a grand ‘Magic Assembly.’ Although the world of magic only exists within the realm of literary fiction, the imagination it inspires is real and enduring. In finding a passion for reading and literature through this unique immersive learning process, pupils inspired creativity and excitement, deserving our encouragement and applause.

There will be countless such “Platform 9¾” encounters in the future, each leading to a completely different world. Facing the future, the pursuit of knowledge and the courage to explore are the world’s real magic.

Many parents face a challenging issue with their pupils becoming less obedient as they get older, making the question of how to discipline them increasingly pressing. However, the very concept of “disciplining” may be a misnomer.

Recently, Mr Yuan and Mr Cheng, two experienced educators who are also parents at Wycombe Abbey Schools, visited WASHZ to discuss with other parents proper ways to guide pupils.

As members of the Wycombe Abbey School Group, Mr Yuan and Mr Cheng looked to share their educational experiences with more parents.

Through the WASHZ parents salon, they aim to strengthen the connection between home and school, allowing family and school education to complement each other, thereby extending the concept of holistic education to households.

“Behaviour cannot be controlled.”

Mr Yuan, deeply involved in the education field for many years, argued that attempting to control pupils’ behaviour is inadvisable, as each pupil is an independent person with their own personality.

Mr Cheng, with his extensive study of child psychology, pointed out that it is normal for pupils to become rebellious and disobedient during adolescence because they are eager to break free from controls and constraints. This is a manifestation of self-awareness and an essential step towards becoming an independent person.

To help pupils navigate adolescence smoothly, parents first need to step out of their own mental comfort zones as being an authority.

The traditional Chinese belief that “strict discipline produces filial children” is outdated. With the social environment having undergone significant changes, Mr Yuan highlighted that this approach essentially uses fear to control pupils’ behaviour, which may be effective in the short term but is counterproductive in the long run.

Returning from the workplace to the family, parents should let go of the authority used to manage companies and employees, becoming friends with their pupils, listening to them as equals, and guiding them with care.

Being friends with pupils is at the heart of WASHZ’s unique boarding education system.

The boarding team patiently responds to pupils’ needs, helps them solve problems, and encourages them like friends. The positive interaction, where they are both teachers and friends, creates a safe and supportive environment for pupils to grow.

At the parents salon, Mr Yuan analysed the scientific principles behind “pupils being difficult to discipline.”

During childhood to adolescence, the part of the brain responsible for emotions, the amygdala, develops rapidly, while the prefrontal cortex, responsible for reason and logic, is not yet fully developed, making it difficult for pupils to control their fluctuating emotions.

One parent shared that her child had a conflict with a good friend and didn’t know how to handle such interpersonal issues, and the parents were also unsure how to help.

However, Mr Cheng believes that these problems might not require exact solutions. Pupils with limited life experience and an immature mindset can have their views easily impacted by small matters.

What parents need to do is respect and understand the pupil’s immaturity, learn to listen to their stories, and provide them with enough trust.

Time will lead them through experiences, and in these experiences, they will grow, but only if they know they always have supportive parents behind them.

The question is, how do we build trust?

Leading by example is the approach both experts agreed on—the way you want to nurture your pupil is how you should conduct yourself.

Many parents feel helpless about their pupils’ excessive use of electronic devices. Mr Cheng noted that pupils’s energy needs an outlet, and if you want to reduce their screen time, attention-diverting methods are necessary. Knowing preaching was ineffective, Mr Cheng found success by leading his pupils in trying various activities; he would take them horse riding outdoors or teach them cooking in the kitchen.

At WASHZ, the diverse extracurricular activities serve a similar purpose.

Pupils select activities based on their own interests, and through this process, they discover that there are things more enjoyable than games and sights more captivating than videos. They are also more likely to find their own talents and passions.

Try to be a friend with pupils, not an authority, and we will be pleasantly surprised to find that pupils actually do not need “disciplining”.

On 2nd November, warm Autumn sunshine marked the return of the long-awaited 2024 AbbeyFest.

Hundreds of families gathered on our campus, immersing themselves in over 40 musical performances ranging from classical to contemporary, and exploring dozens of unique market booths. The event was a musical extravaganza, a culinary feast, and a joyous journey.

This year, young musicians from our sister schools in Changzhou and Nanjing took to the stage, delivering impeccable performances that earned waves of applause from the audience.

Our music transcended regional differences and brought people closer together, embodying the strong sense of belonging that the Wycombe Abbey community proudly cherishes. It was a testament to the power of music to unite us all, creating a sense of community that was palpable throughout the event.

This year’s AbbeyFest featured a special guest – Zoë Capps, an international exchange scholar from the UK, one of ten scholars joining WASHZ through the Wycombe Abbey International Scholarship Programme.

During the Inaugural Event, Zoë’s stunning rendition of the hit Chinese song “Light Years Away” stunned the audience.

At the AbbeyFest, Zoë participated in three performances, and her enchanting voice added a vibrant touch to this celebration of international connections.

AbbeyFest was designed to be a celebration of diversity. Alongside popular songs that are well-known to the audience, there were performances of classical music, FWA Choir, dance, and martial arts, showcasing a variety of styles. The open and inclusive atmosphere of the stage, blending Eastern and Western elements, provided the audience with a multifaceted artistic experience, ensuring there was something for everyone.

Beyond the spectacular performances, the open-air market was another AbbeyFest highlight.

Over 60 market booths were arranged in succession. As guests wandered through, they were greeted by an array of enticing aromas. From local delicacies to Western gourmet dishes, each flavour tantalised the taste buds.

Cultural and creative goods drew visitors’ attention with their distinctive curios, creative ornaments, and handcrafted items.

An equestrian area next to the market gave visitors the fun of interacting with horses. Visitors could enjoy a leisurely carriage ride around the campus, basking in the gentle breeze and warm sun.

Families spread picnic mats on the sports field and sat together, savouring food or enjoying the music. The wonderful family time they added a warm and heartfelt atmosphere to the event.

In addition to the main venue, six check-in spots were set up around the campus, allowing guests who collected stamps at them all to participate in a lucky draw.

An art exhibition of dozens of pupil artworks were displayed in the common areas. These works, varying in style and technique, showcase WASHZ pupil’s passion for art.In front of the art exhibition, an entire graffiti wall allowed pupils to unleash their creativity.

As the grand prizes were awarded one by one, the interactive atmosphere on site reached its peak, making every guest feel like an integral part of the event.

Recently, pupils enthusiastically participated in various challenge games at the Lower School STEM Week Science Fair. Activities such as “Identify Herbs by Smell,” the “Black Box Challenge,” and the “Taste Bud Adventure” offered a series of ‘edutainment’ experiences, marking a perfect conclusion to this term’s STEM Week.

Recently, WASHZ Lower School embarked on a unique “Traditional Chinese Medicine” themed STEM Week.At first glance, this theme might be counterintuitive to the conventional perception of “science”, but the STEM Week Coordinator, Ms Mandy Fang, believes that science encompasses more than just the physical sciences.

“Life sciences and medical sciences are also important branches of science, and these subjects have become very popular university majors in recent years.”

Mr Edward Philpott, Executive Head of the WASHZ Lower School fully endorsed the STEM Week, noting that the pupils enjoyed themselves while enhancing their scientific literacy through immersive cultural experiences.Mr Philpott further mentioned that the STEAM education concept was originally introduced from the West, emphasising cross-disciplinary learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

Chinese educators creatively combined Chinese culture with Western STEAM education, proposing the “C-STEAM” concept. This term’s STEM Week drew its inspiration from this innovative idea.

STEM Week is an academic practice project the WASHZ Lower School consistently holds. It aims to provide pupils with diverse and multi-level learning experiences. At WASHZ, we understand that academic excellence cannot be confined to classrooms and textbooks. Critical thinking, innovative thinking, and problem-solving skills are more often developed through practice and exploration. Integrating knowledge and action, along with holistic development, is the original intention of STEM Week and the educational philosophy upheld by WASHZ.

Teachers put in their utmost effort into designing engaging classroom experiments, ingeniously embedding scientific principles within experimental steps.

This allows pupils to efficiently grasp academic knowledge while marvelling at the wonders of science. According to Ms Fang, the lower grade pupils learned how to make a traditional Chinese steelyard, known as “deng zi.” This tool for measuring traditional Chinese herbs is part of China’s cultural heritage.

Through this experiment, pupils grasped the fundamental principles of levers and became familiar with traditional Chinese measurement units, such as “Jin” and “Liang”.Additionally, pupils applied engineering knowledge to design a drip irrigation system for watering Chinese herbs planted by the senior lower school pupils on the campus farm.

Senior pupils used chemical techniques in the laboratory to produce Banlangen (Isatis root) capsules. They started by brewing the herb powder, then went through a series of steps, including filtration, compression, and drying, eventually creating well-formed traditional Chinese medicine capsules.

The week-long practical classes showcased the perfect blend of traditional culture and modern science in every corner. These academic yet fun experimental activities deepened the pupils’ understanding of traditional Chinese medicine and related culture and enhanced their spirit of inquiry and hands-on skills.

On Friday, STEM Week concluded with an entertaining and educational Science Fair.

The fair featured multiple challenge activities, where pupils had to complete each challenge to earn bronze coins. These coins could then be used to purchase various traditional Chinese medicinal foods available at the event.

As Ms Fang mentioned, traditional culture emphasises the concept of “food and medicine sharing the same source.” Throughout history, Chinese people have believed that food, under certain conditions, can also have therapeutic effects. The diverse array of traditional Chinese snacks at the event aimed to help pupils learn about the medicinal value of these ingredients while enjoying delicious treats and experiencing the intricacies of traditional Chinese medicine culture.

The engaging challenge activities successfully stimulated the pupils’ enthusiasm, and the exhibition turned into a carnival blending traditional culture with modern science, with long queues forming in front of many activities.

Throughout the week, Lower School pupils explored the broad theme of “Chinese herbal medicine,” identifying problems, solving them, and reflecting on their experiences. This helps broaden their knowledge and deepen their understanding of both traditional culture and science.STEM Week at WASHZ is far from being just an academic event. When serious and rigorous scientific theories meet engaging interactive practice, participating pupils gain immediate benefits and nurture seeds of curiosity, innovation, and exploration in them. These seeds will grow with them, preparing them to face the ever-changing world.
